We were approached by Champion to reinterpret the iconic reverse weave sweatshirt. The goal was to take a preexisting garment and modify it, while keeping the soul of the base garment visible.
Our concept for this hoodie was to create a DIY patchwork sweatshirt representing our vision of vintage California. The materials used make each of the hoodies 1/1 and come from a multi-generational collection of vintage fabrics, trims and crystal embellishments from the 1960’s, 1970’s & 1980’s.
Some of the fabrics come from vintage clothing like the 1960’s hot pink cotton velvet or kitchen curtains from the 1970’s featuring mushrooms, blue pears and old jugs. The up-cycled Swarovski crystal trims previously embellished old dresses & accessories. Look closely and you will notice a variety of unique machine stitches used to sew down the patches.
There are also hand embroidered details on the front pocket, sleeves and hood, as well as hand cut and frayed rib hems. You’ll also find a handstitched “Ab” next to the Champion “c” logo on the arm, reinterpreting both the Abc. and Champion logo.
Each hoodie was hand crafted in Los Angeles over an innumerable number of hours, utilizing Abc.’s mentality of the “spirituality of recycling” and do it yourself mentality.
